In todayââ¬â¢s society not only are we obsessed with technology, we depend and rely on it daily. Do we, as a society, depend too much on technology? In recent years a phenomena called social networking has really taken off. While there are numerous social networking sites, Facebook is by far the largest and most popular. Facebook has more than 1 billion active users and the average user has 130 friends (Statistics). Have Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites gotten out of hand? While some people may believe social networking has positive effects on humans, it in fact has negatively altered the way we communicate, our identities, and even our health. While some people tell their friends that they will ââ¬Å"see them on Facebook later,â⬠no physical interaction has taken place. Telling someone information on a social networking site is much different from telling them in a physical location. Similarly to feedback, location plays a key role on how the message is interpreted (Guerva). For an instance, remember back to my previous example in which you wanted to tell a dear friend that you have been diagnosed with cancer. By telling them on a social networking site instead of a hospital, for example, they very well could misunderstand your message. While interpretation is a key component in communication, social networking has vastly changed our language and the way we speak. When I started high school texting was becoming ââ¬Å"the next big thingâ⬠; social networking is modern societyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"next big thingâ⬠. Why would I bring texting into this paper? Texting left a permanent scar on the English language (Guerva). For instance, think about some of the following acronyms used in texting: LOL, OMG, WTH, JK, and so forth. Saving Energy is one of the major concerns here on Oakland University campus. After doing some intense research I came to find out that OUââ¬â¢s campus spends over six million dollar a year on heating, cooling, and electricity. Many times students take living on campus for granted and donââ¬â¢t realize how expensive things are, because they donââ¬â¢t have a direct electricity bill. So when youââ¬â¢re in your dorm and leave the television, the light, and your cell phone plugged in you wasting electricity which is causing harm to your campus. One way of saving energy is to simple cut off your laptop, and when youââ¬â¢re not using your phone charger, television, toaster, microwave, and so forth just unplug the appliances and keep in mind itââ¬â¢s for your campus, earth, and not to mention your pockets; when it comes to tuition payments. Another way of saving energy is compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use about seventy five percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. I would recommend that Oakland University adopts saving energy through lighting every dorm, apartment, bathroom, and hallway with compact fluorescent light bulbs. Reducing pollution is the second issue that needs to be addressed on OUââ¬â¢s campus. People go on their everyday daily routine without noticing the environment surround them. I must say Oakland University campus is very clean but there are some underground pollutants that you just donââ¬â¢t see walking to class. However, there are diffidently some changes that can be made by everyone to even better our OUââ¬â¢s community. In order for this school to reduce or eliminate the amount of pollutant and waste it generates, an attitude of ââ¬Å"less is betterâ⬠should be adopted. That is the question I will be attempting to answer in the following few pages. To start, I will talk about their beginning as well as their recent growth in popularity in the past decade. I will discuss the medical views that are for and against the use of supplements, what types are most important, and what types people need. To conclude, I will tell about the supplements that I take and whether I will continue to do so. Many years ago, there existed diseases such as scurvy, rickets, and everyday colds. These illnesses were the cause of a lot of sickness and sometimes led to other illness and death. Chemists looked everywhere for a cure. Then came the first supplement to become popularized in its uses this was vitamin C. This wonder pill was said to help the body fight colds and other sickness. With the discovery and use of these new vitamins the Food and Nutrition Board convened in 1941 to determine adequate dietary intakes of essential nutrients. At this time deficiency diseases were a common public-health problem. Since that meeting, with the process of food fortification and improved diets, these diseases have been relatively uncommon except in the poor and elderly. In 1943, the first Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) were published. (Skerrett, 25) These amounts were stated in what amounts were just enough to maintain good health, as that any more would just be excreted by the body or build u p in the tissues. Vitamin supplements have grown in popularity at a pretty constant rate since their development, but have become especially popular in recent years. The baby boomer generation that grew up on healthy diets is finding it hard to maintain that healthy lifestyle, and would rather now just pop a pill. Some experts fear that we will become dependent on these supplements and find everyone taking 50-60 different pills each day. Today, vitamin supplements are a $2 billion a year business in the United States. Even with all these wonder pills available in the market, experts still agree that foods should be the first and most appropriate source of nutrients. (Ross, 354-55) In the past few years, the most popular supplement group has been the antioxidants-beta-carotene associated with vitamin A as well as the antioxidants in vitamin E.
